What certified driving lessons are required for a category B licence?

Compulsory driving practice must be completed with an instructor and certified; the number and modules depend on the rules applying to your learner's permit.

Category B requires documented driving lessons at a driving school. The Ministry (MIT) still publishes the six-hour scheme; Ministerial Decree 294/2025 will introduce different modules once it takes effect.

What certified driving lessons are for

Certified practice consists of compulsory driving sessions with a qualified instructor at a driving school. These are not the same as every informal lesson with a family member: the rules set their scope, content and documentation. The MIT category B information consulted requires at least six hours, including practice on motorways or major out-of-town roads and in night-time visibility conditions. The certificate needed to book the practical test proves that you completed the lessons under the applicable scheme.

Decree 294 of 2025 sets out a new eight-hour plan, with modules on safety preparation, urban driving, out-of-town roads and night-time visibility. Its provisions take effect only when the ministerial director's decree activates the certification platform. For learner's permits issued before that date, the decree keeps the 2012 scheme in place. Before booking lessons, ask the school which programme and certification system it will use for your application.

How to organise the lessons

The driving school agrees the schedule and instructor, checks that the vehicle is suitable and records the hours under the applicable rules. Lessons are individual or structured as required by the decree in force; you cannot certify after the fact lessons taken with a private individual. At the end, ask for a copy or reference number for the certificate and check that your name, category and application details are correct. Keep the paperwork with your learner's permit and receipts, especially if the school sends the certificate directly to the local Civil Motorisation Office (UMC).

Do not wait until your learner's permit is nearly over to book every module: night driving and fast-road practice require an available instructor, suitable vehicle and appropriate conditions. Ask whether the school handles the certificate and when it sends it. If you hold a special licence or have recorded medical restrictions, tell the driving school: Decree 294 provides for adjustments or reductions in some cases. The school and UMC must confirm whether those provisions already apply to your authorisation.

Check the certificate

  • Check that the number of hours and content match the rules for your learner's permit.
  • Ask which scheme applies based on the issue date.
  • Make sure the certificate has been received or is available before the practical test.

Frequently asked questions

Do lessons with my father count as certified driving lessons?

No. Category B certified lessons must take place with an instructor at a driving school; practice with an accompanying driver is separate.

Do I need six or eight hours?

The MIT information consulted says six hours. Decree 294/2025 introduces eight hours, effective from the date of the decree that activates the platform. Check your case with the UMC.
