What happens if your provisional licence expires before your test?

If the authorisation expires, promptly check your remaining attempts and the procedure with the Civil Motorisation Office. Do not assume an extension.

Do not ignore the expiry date or interpret it on your own. The UMC can tell you whether to renew, submit a new application or follow transitional rules.

Check the date and remaining attempts before expiry

If your provisional licence is about to expire and you have not taken the practical test, find its issue date and your test booking, then ask the UMC which attempts you can still book. For Category B, MIT allows three practical tests within eleven months, starting from the month after you pass the theory test and receive the provisional licence. Check this period against your document and actual application: a postponed or failed test can change what you need to do next. Do not rely on the date on an old document or on another candidate’s calculation.

Contact the Civil Motorisation Office before expiry, especially if you are waiting for an available test slot. Ask whether a test booked after expiry is allowed, which payment receipts remain valid, and whether you need a new provisional licence or application. Do not assume an extension or suspension of deadlines is automatic. If a driving school manages your application, ask for a copy of your bookings and certificates so you can confirm the information directly with the office.

Check how certificates and lessons are affected

Expiry may affect tests, medical examinations and driving certificates in different ways. Do not assume every document must be renewed or that every document remains valid. MIT’s Category B page describes the number and timing of tests; the Motorist Portal handles applications and payments. If you submit a new application, check which certified lessons can be recognised. Decree 294/2025 includes transitional rules, but they apply only once the executive decree activating the platform takes effect and according to the authorisation date.

For a new application, prepare an up-to-date checklist of the application, medical examination, PagoPA receipts, photograph and documents. First ask the UMC whether your medical certificate is still valid and which fees are due; paying again without instructions can lead to duplicate payments. If the office cancels a test you had booked, keep the notice and ask for a new date and clarification about document validity. A written reply with a protocol number can help avoid conflicting answers at the counter.

What to do now

  • Check the expiry date and remaining tests shown in your application.
  • Contact the UMC before that date and explain the reason for the delay.
  • Ask which documents, payments and certificates are still valid.

Frequently asked questions

Does a provisional licence renew itself?

No. Do not assume it renews automatically. The UMC must tell you whether you need a renewal, a new application or another applicable procedure.

Do I have to repeat all my lessons if I submit a new application?

It depends on the certificate and the transitional rules in force. Ask the UMC which lessons may be recognised in your new application.
