Driving test
Which manoeuvres might be included in a driving test?
Parking, reversing and turning around are skills to practise, but the manoeuvres selected vary from one test to another.
The category B practical test assesses vehicle control and safe manoeuvring. Practise a range of skills rather than expecting a fixed sequence.
Skills to practise
In the category B practical test, the examiner checks that you can control the vehicle and perform manoeuvres covered by the assessment criteria. Practise reversing, parking, turning around, stopping and moving off in different conditions. The examiner may also ask you to check or explain something about vehicle safety. There is no guaranteed sequence that is identical for every candidate: the manoeuvre and location depend on the session, test centre and road conditions.
Practising a manoeuvre means completing it with continuous observation and control, not memorising a precise number of steering-wheel turns. Before moving, look around and use your mirrors; go slowly, keep your path predictable and stop if you lose visibility or space. If the manoeuvre needs more than one correction, make the necessary adjustments without rushing and avoid creating a hazard. Other people’s safety comes before speed or a perfectly neat parking job.
How to practise effectively
Ask your instructor to vary the manoeuvres, starting positions, available space and type of parking. Begin in a safe, open area, then gradually move on to real-world situations. After each attempt, choose one thing to improve: your starting position, mirror checks, speed or visual reference. Repeating the exact same setup may feel easy but will not prepare you for a different request. When private practice is allowed, follow the learner’s permit rules; it does not replace certified lessons.
The test is not a manoeuvring competition: the examiner considers your overall behaviour and ability. A good manoeuvre does not make up for failing to check pedestrians or vehicles, and a careful correction is not automatically a serious fault. Keep observing while you steer. If an instruction is unclear, ask for clarification before moving, if the road situation allows. At the end, ask your instructor to run a test without prompts and explain what you still need to practise.
A quick mental check
- Look before you start and keep observing as you move.
- Go slowly and stay in control of the car.
- Correct your path only after checking the available space.
- Finish the manoeuvre in a safe, legal position.

Frequently asked questions
Will I fail if I correct my parking?
There is no rule that every correction means a fail. What matters is that the manoeuvre remains safe and follows the examiner’s instructions and assessment.
Which parking manoeuvre is guaranteed in the test?
There is no guaranteed sequence of manoeuvres. Practise the required range with your instructor.
