Driving test
What happens during the category B practical test?
From the initial checks to driving in traffic: what to expect from the test without assuming every candidate gets the same route.
The test assesses vehicle preparation, manoeuvres and safe driving in traffic. The order and situations depend on the examiner and the conditions.
Before you set off
The category B practical test starts by identifying the candidate and checking that the session is booked correctly. The examiner may ask you to check parts of the vehicle or explain how certain controls work, such as adjustments, lights or safety equipment. It is not a ritual to recite: you should know where the control is and how to prepare the car for driving. Use a vehicle that meets the Ministry’s requirements and check that the documents and equipment are in order before the test.
The test then includes manoeuvres and driving in traffic. You must show that you can move off, stop, change direction, observe and interact safely with other road users. The examiner does not necessarily assign the same manoeuvres or route to every candidate: the choice depends on what can be assessed at that test centre and the road conditions. The MIT describes the category B test, while the assessment criteria come from European rules and their implementing decrees.
What the examiner looks for
The test is about more than making the car move. The examiner assesses vehicle control, observation, mirror use, signalling, respect for right of way and speed limits, choice of speed and distance, and care around pedestrians and cyclists. A manoeuvre does not have to be quick to be correct: perform it with control, visibility and awareness of your surroundings. If you notice a mistake, do not make a sudden correction; stay safe and listen to any instruction from the examiner.
Depending on the arrangements, the examiner may be in the car with an instructor or another authorised accompanying person. Ask your school or UMC how the test crew is arranged at your centre. If you do not pass, the examiner will explain the procedure and you can ask what to improve. Before booking again, check how many attempts remain and when your learner’s permit expires: failing does not let you drive alone or automatically extend the permit.
How to prepare
- Practise in different settings and ask for specific feedback, not just a general score.
- Review vehicle checks using the manual for the test car.
- Bring the required documents and arrive early on test day.
- During the test, observe, signal and choose manoeuvres that leave a safe margin.

Frequently asked questions
Does the examiner always ask for the same manoeuvres?
No. The test assesses the required skills, but the route and manoeuvres vary with the test centre, traffic and the examiner’s assessment.
Can I ask the examiner to repeat an instruction?
If you did not understand, ask calmly for clarification before carrying out the manoeuvre, while keeping the situation safe.
