BE practical test: what stages does it include?

The BE test assesses trailer operations and road driving. Ask the driving school about the current programme and test combination.

The BE practical test checks whether you can drive a category B car and trailer combination. It includes specific vehicle operations and a driving phase under the current programme. Prepare with an instructor and follow the licensing office’s instructions.

Pre-drive operations and checks

Before driving, you must show that you know and can perform the required safety and inspection operations for the combination. Depending on the official programme, these may include coupling and uncoupling, connecting devices, checking tyres and securing a load. Do not rely on an online video: learn the sequence and assessment points during practice with an instructor and the vehicle used for the test.

Candidates should also know how to check that the trailer is compatible with the car and that the limits appear in the documents. You must already hold category B to take the BE test. Under current rules, theory is generally not repeated after the relevant B test, but MIT provides an oral check for specific historical cases. Ask the licensing office whether the date of your B test changes your route. Bring the required documents and check your licence validity beforehand.

Manoeuvres and road driving

The test includes driving the combination and the manoeuvres required for BE, as well as traffic participation. Practise with an actual trailer: turning paths and braking distances differ from those of a car alone. Learn to use mirrors, judge width, take bends and reverse under instructor guidance. This is a practical test for the category, not a generic drive in a car without a trailer.

Before booking, ask which combination the school will provide and whether its mass and features meet BE requirements. Confirm where to meet, what equipment to bring and which documents to present. There is no universal number of practical mistakes that automatically guarantees failure; the examiner assesses conduct under official criteria. Studying load and towing rules helps, but app quizzes and statistics do not replace lessons, coupling and manoeuvres with an instructor.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review rules through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and statistics; practical stages require an instructor.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BE test only a road drive?

No. It also includes specific trailer operations, in addition to driving the combination. Confirm the applicable programme with the school or office.

Do I need to repeat the theory exam?

Applicants generally need category B and take the practical test. For certain historic B test dates, MIT provides an oral check; ask the office.
