B1 practical test: requirements for the quadricycle

The B1 test vehicle must meet Ministry requirements; check its category, documents and controls before the test.

The vehicle for the B1 practical test must belong to the required category and meet the technical requirements for the test. A sales label is not enough: check its approval, specifications and availability with the school or licensing office before booking.

Which vehicle may be used

The B1 practical test uses a non-light quadricycle that meets the characteristics set for the test. The word “microcar” does not prove that a vehicle is suitable. Ask for its approved category and check the registration document for mass, power and other relevant technical data. Similar-looking models can have different versions, some classified as L6e and others as non-light quadricycles. An L6e vehicle does not become suitable for B1 simply because it has four wheels or is larger than a moped.

MIT publishes the minimum features and conditions for the test vehicle. The driving school or office arranging the test can confirm whether the available vehicle meets them and whether its transmission is manual or automatic. Also ask whether the school supplies the vehicle and which documents are needed. Do not choose by advertised power alone: approval depends on official data and the registered configuration. For an electric quadricycle, confirm that the correct approved figures are used rather than a promotional peak value.

Preparing for the test manoeuvres

The practical test assesses your driving on the test vehicle: control of the controls, required manoeuvres and behaviour in traffic under the applicable programme. Test conditions are separate from the vehicles you may drive after the licence is issued. B1 covers a defined vehicle category, while an individual vehicle may also have restrictions. During instructor-led practice, become familiar with the seating position, visibility, parking brake and gear selector.

Bring the required documents and follow the school’s directions about where to meet and how to use the vehicle. If you need an adaptation or the stated vehicle changes, raise this before test day. There is no universal list of mistakes that causes automatic failure in every circumstance; the examiner assesses the test under official criteria. Theory quizzes can help review rules, but they do not teach control of a real quadricycle or replace practical practice.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review theory with chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and statistics; practical driving requires instructor-led vehicle practice.

Frequently asked questions

Will any quadricycle work for the B1 test?

No. It must belong to the required category and meet the technical test requirements. Check the documents with the school or licensing office.

Does four wheels automatically mean B1?

No. It may be a light AM quadricycle. The approved category, not the number of wheels, determines the licence.
