Category D driving test: what to expect

The category D test assesses your ability to drive a bus and takes place in a vehicle that meets the requirements for the category.

A category D licence requires theory and practical tests according to your individual route. Professional passenger transport may also require a passenger CQC.

Before the test

Category D authorises you to drive vehicles designed to carry passengers within the limits and definitions of the Italian Highway Code. You must already hold a valid category B licence to obtain category D, and you take the tests required for your route. The MIT guidance for categories D1–D describes the requirements, documents, age limits and test vehicles; check it before enrolling because requirements may depend on your age and any professional qualification. Categories D1 and D are not interchangeable: they authorise different types of vehicle.

Theory for the higher categories follows a syllabus separate from category B. If you already hold professional qualifications or a higher-category licence, ask the UMC which tests you need and whether an exemption applies. Medical checks may have additional requirements: ask the certifying doctor whether your case needs review by the Local Medical Commission (CML). Before booking, check that your category B licence is valid and have the receipts and training certificates ready. A category D licence does not automatically replace the CQC required for professional passenger transport.

What the examiner assesses

The practical test assesses your preparation for safe driving, control of the vehicle and ability to drive smoothly on the road. A bus’s size makes it essential to judge clearances, watch mirrors, anticipate hazards, choose a suitable path and stop in a controlled way. You must also show that you know the vehicle’s required safety checks. The examiner may ask for manoeuvres and checks under the test programme; do not expect the same sequence at every test centre.

Practise with an instructor who knows category D vehicles. Ask to work on tight turns, stops, reversing where required, pulling in to the kerb and managing space without endangering people or property. The test vehicle must meet MIT technical requirements; confirm with the school or UMC which vehicle will be used. After passing, keep your category B licence valid and follow any codes or restrictions shown on the licence. If you need the licence for work, ask separately about the passenger CQC and your employer’s requirements.
