Driving test
What to bring to your category C driving test
Identity document, application, learner’s permit and vehicle: checks to make before your category C test at the Motor Vehicle Office.
For the category C test, bring proof of identity and the documents listed in your appointment notice, along with a valid learner’s permit and a suitable vehicle. The MIT sets the lorry’s test requirements.
Personal documents
Your Motor Vehicle Office appointment notice specifies what to present on test day. As a minimum, prepare a valid identity document and your category C learner’s permit, plus booking confirmation and any receipts required by that office. If your driving school or the lorry provider has receipts or forms to submit, agree in advance on who will bring them.
Check that your name, application number and category match, and that your learner’s permit has not expired. If you have a medical restriction or an aid recorded on your document, check that the vehicle and test arrangements are compatible. Bring any required originals and keep copies accessible, but follow the official appointment notice rather than a generic checklist.
The lorry must meet the requirements
The practical category C test cannot be taken in just any lorry. The MIT publishes minimum vehicle requirements, including category C, mass, length, width, speed, ABS, a gearbox with at least eight forward gears and a tachograph, as well as load-space and actual-mass requirements. Specifications may change. Check the MIT guidance and ask the vehicle provider for the registration document and the exact configuration to be presented.
If you are applying as a private candidate and have asked a driving school for a lorry, check that your application is correctly registered and that the vehicle is available for the whole session. A mismatch between the exam list and your application can cause a problem even if you passed the theory test. Do not assume your booking is confirmed until you have received the appointment and vehicle details.
Getting ready for the test
Arrive early enough for document checks and vehicle preparation. Before the test, review safety features and preliminary checks that may be requested, using the MIT category guidance and your instructor’s directions. The test assesses behaviour, manoeuvring and vehicle control: a list of documents does not replace practice in the lorry.
If the vehicle breaks down or the session is postponed, ask how the event is recorded and whether your attempt is preserved. Keep the notice and contact the school or UMC; do not leave assuming the appointment was cancelled without consequences.
The day before
Confirm the test centre, time, vehicle, documents and learner’s permit validity. Check payments and whether an authorisation is needed if someone else submits documents. If you are ill or cannot attend, contact the office immediately through its official channel and ask about postponement or cancellation rules.
