Which mistakes can cause a driving test to be stopped?

There is no universal list of minor errors: the examiner assesses safety, compliance and control in the context of the test.

A dangerous action or breach of a requirement can affect the test result. Examples should not be treated as a complete official list.

Safety and rules matter more than perfection

During the practical test, the examiner assesses whether you control the vehicle, observe the road and follow the rules. An intervention needed to prevent danger, ignoring a sign, failing to give way or putting another road user at risk can affect the result. There is no simple, identical list of “three serious mistakes” for every situation: the assessment takes account of how serious the behaviour was, the circumstances and whether it was repeated.

By contrast, a brief hesitation or correcting a manoeuvre does not automatically mean you have failed. Your response matters: if you realise there is not enough space, stopping and restoring a safe situation is better than forcing the manoeuvre. Signalling late, failing to check mirrors or choosing an unsuitable speed may show that you did not read the situation correctly. The examiner assesses the actual effect, not one isolated action out of context.

Learn to recognise risk

During lessons, ask your instructor to practise situations where you need to decide whether to move off, wait or abandon a manoeuvre. Practise observing pedestrian crossings, side roads and cyclists; check mirrors before changing lanes or position. Safe driving shows in anticipating events, leaving enough space and not pressuring others. If your instructor often has to touch the steering wheel or pedals, ask which skill you should improve before booking the test.

If the test is stopped or you do not pass, listen to the reason and ask what you can improve. The examiner communicates the result according to the procedure. If you dispute an assessment, use the official channels rather than arguing while driving. Before trying again, check remaining attempts, the learner’s permit expiry date and test-car availability. Do not repeat the test in a hurry: a lesson focused on difficult areas may strengthen your preparation.

Habits that help

  • Follow signs, priority rules and speed limits instead of relying on memorising the route.
  • Observe and signal before changing direction or lanes.
  • If a situation is unclear, slow down or wait safely.
  • Ask for specific feedback after every practice drive.

Frequently asked questions

Will failing to check a mirror always make me fail?

Not every omission has the same effect. The situation and risk created matter; the examiner assesses your overall behaviour and safety.

Can the examiner intervene?

The examiner may give instructions and, if needed, intervene for safety under the test procedure. An intervention may affect the assessment.
