Forgetting to signal on the driving test: why it is a safety mistake

Indicators tell others what you intend to do. Use them before turning, changing lanes or pulling away when needed.

Forgetting an indicator can confuse other road users. Signal manoeuvres in good time, check that the indicator switches off afterwards and keep observing the road.

An indicator communicates a manoeuvre

A direction indicator warns other road users that you are about to change direction or position. Forgetting it during a test is more than a formal slip: a driver behind you, a cyclist or a pedestrian may misunderstand your path. Before turning, changing lanes, leaving a parking space or pulling away, assess the manoeuvre and signal in good time as required by the Highway Code.

An indicator does not give you priority or automatically make a manoeuvre safe. After signalling, check your mirrors and blind spot, assess other road users’ distance and speed, and move only if you can do so safely. A signal given at the last moment does not give others time to react and can make your intention unclear.

A sequence to practise

While driving, practise this simple mental sequence: observe, signal, observe again, manoeuvre, then check that the indicator has switched off. It is not a rigid script: the situation may require observations in different directions or waiting. Your instructor can help you distinguish an early preparation from signalling so early that it suggests a different turn.

After turning or overtaking, check that the indicator is not still on. The self-cancelling function may not work with every steering movement, and you remain responsible for signalling. Do not rely on the clicking sound if music or road noise masks it; glance at the dashboard when it is safe.

If you forget to signal

If you realise you failed to signal, do not make a sudden movement to correct it. Keep a safe course, assess whether you can still make the manoeuvre, and signal only if it remains useful. If the examiner’s instruction has already passed, continue driving safely; do not suddenly cross lanes to catch up with it.

During lessons, ask your instructor to point out signalling mistakes as they happen and review what you should have observed. Practise at junctions, roundabouts, parking spaces and lane changes. Circumstances change, but the signal’s purpose remains the same: to communicate a genuine intention.

Preparing for the test

Practise quietly describing the manoeuvre you are about to make until the checks become automatic. Before setting off, check that the indicators work and know where their dashboard light is. The test assesses your overall driving and safety, not a single phrase learned by heart.

Frequently asked questions

Should I signal when entering a roundabout?

Signal manoeuvres according to the rules and the path you intend to take. Use indicators for entry, lane changes and exit where appropriate.

Will I automatically fail the test if I forget to signal?

The result depends on the overall assessment and the risk created. There is no automatic answer that applies to every incident.
