Getting your licence
How to apply for a D or D1 driving licence
How to apply for D1 or D, including vehicle limits, age requirements and the passenger-transport CQC.
To apply for D1 or D, submit an application to the UMC with your current licence, medical fitness certificate, ID and required payments. A category D licence and passenger CQC serve different purposes.
D1 and D cover different vehicles
D1 covers motor vehicles designed to carry no more than 16 passengers in addition to the driver and no longer than eight metres; the permitted trailer has a maximum authorised mass of 750 kg. Category D covers motor vehicles designed to carry more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, with the permitted light trailer. To choose, check the vehicle registration document and consider the service you intend to provide.
The licence authorises you to drive the vehicle. Passenger CQC is a separate professional qualification required for the professional transport activities listed by MIT, such as private-hire or scheduled bus services. If you are looking for passenger-transport work, check both qualifications and the employer’s requirements; a category D licence alone is not a CQC.
Application and documents
MIT lists the Civil Motor Vehicle Office as the place to apply. The application uses form TT2112 and requires ID, tax code, your current licence, proof of a medical visit and PagoPA receipts for the theory and practical stages. MIT’s page lists additional documents for representatives and non-EU/EEA citizens. Download the current form and make payments through the current channel; do not rely on old guides for amounts or procedures.
The medical visit confirms that you meet the physical and mental fitness requirements for the category. If a local medical commission is involved, or you have restrictions, follow your doctor’s and UMC’s instructions. An invalid certificate could mean repeating this step. To avoid omissions, prepare a folder with the signed form, receipts, originals to show and required copies, and check the official list the day before.
Age and exam route
MIT lists 21 as the minimum age for D1 and 24 for D. The minimum age for D may be reduced to 21 through the route that includes a passenger CQC, subject to the relevant conditions: you must complete and obtain the CQC before the practical test. General enrolment in a course is not enough.
You must pass a theory test and a practical test; the UMC issues the learner’s permit after you pass theory. Your preparation should cover manoeuvres, vehicle checks and passenger safety as well as quizzes. The UMC sets local bookings and availability. Check MIT’s minimum test-vehicle requirements in advance: a D or D1 bus is not interchangeable with an ordinary driving-school car.
After applying
Keep your application number and check booking status on the Portal or with the office. If you plan to work professionally, schedule the CQC course separately and ask how to coordinate it with the learner’s permit and practical test. Do not buy a course or booking based on a tentative date: the time windows depend on the office and available test sessions.

Frequently asked questions
Is D1 enough for a bus?
Only if the vehicle falls within D1 limits: no more than 16 passengers in addition to the driver and a maximum length of eight metres.
Can I work as a driver as soon as I get a category D licence?
Not necessarily. Professional passenger transport may also require passenger CQC and may have contract or service-specific requirements.
