What documents do I need to apply for a category B licence?

A practical checklist for preparing the application, ID, medical visit and category B payments using current forms.

A category B application requires the relevant form, identification, tax code, medical certificate and required payments. Use MIT’s current checklist and check with your UMC.

Core documents

For a category B application, prepare the completed TT2112 form, valid ID, your tax code or health card, proof of the digitised medical certificate and PagoPA receipts. MIT lists N067 for the application and theory test: €26.40 in fees plus €16 stamp duty, for a total of €42.40. When booking the practical test, you need N019 for €16. The certificate is valid for three months if issued by a single-doctor medical service, or six months if issued by a local medical commission (CML).

The medical certificate is issued after checks of your physical and mental fitness, and may require a photograph or additional health documents. If your condition requires assessment by a CML, the standard process may not apply: contact the relevant commission before booking a routine visit. Also check the certificate’s validity period in the application instructions. Bring originals and copies when required, and check whether your office accepts digital documents or only paper copies.

Payments and checks before you submit

Pay Motor Vehicle Office fees through PagoPA using the specified payment reason. Do not copy amounts from old guides: consult the payment page, select the correct procedure and check that the receipt shows the required code and recipient. Some payments may only be due when booking a test. A payment with the wrong fee or payment reason may require a new transaction and a refund request, so check the official list before proceeding.

Before submitting your documents, check that your name, tax code and personal details match across all papers; that signatures and any required authorisation are included; that receipts are legible and linked to the correct application; and that the medical documents are still valid. Ask for proof of submission or note the reference number, and keep a full copy. A driving school can submit the application for you, but ask which originals it must keep and which it will return. Offices may require different booking methods, so confirm the checklist with your UMC.

Checklist before you leave

  • Check MIT’s category B application list and the attachments required for your case.
  • Ask your doctor which medical documents to bring.
  • Pay only the fee and payment reason specified for that step.
  • Keep copies, PagoPA receipts and your application reference number.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need a photocopy of my tax code?

Yes. MIT’s checklist asks for a photocopy of your tax code or health card showing it. Also bring ID and any attachments specific to your application.

Can I use a PagoPA receipt from an earlier application?

No. Payments are tied to a fee and procedure. For category B, MIT lists N067 (€42.40) for the application and theory test and N019 (€16) for the practical test. Generate the correct payment notice for the step you are booking.
