Goods or passenger CQC: which qualification do you need?

Choose between goods and passenger CQC according to the professional transport performed; the licence category depends on the vehicle.

The goods CQC covers professional carriage of goods, while the passenger CQC covers passenger transport in cases set by law. The driving licence is chosen according to the vehicle category.

The qualification follows the transport activity

The goods CQC and passenger CQC are separate professional qualifications. The first concerns professional driving of vehicles used to carry goods in situations governed by law; the second concerns professional passenger transport. A CQC is not chosen from the vehicle's shape alone: consider the activity, use and applicable rules as well.

The driving licence, by contrast, follows the vehicle category. A truck may require C or CE depending on its mass and trailer; a bus may require D or D1 depending on passenger capacity and dimensions. If the professional service falls under the requirement, the relevant CQC is needed in addition to the vehicle licence. Assess statutory exemptions against the real case; do not infer one from a short journey or company ownership of the vehicle.

Mixed activities and checks before work

A business may provide both goods and passenger transport, but that does not make the qualifications interchangeable. A driver assigned different duties should check the service performed on each journey and the licence and CQC categories it requires. Carrying equipment in a goods vehicle, for example, is not the same activity as carrying passengers on a bus.

Before starting a job, gather the vehicle category and data, the nature and purpose of the transport, any exemption and the qualifications already held. Ask the employer or competent authority when the case is unclear. CQC has its own training and procedures; a theory quiz does not replace the required course. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you review goods or passenger chapters and quizzes with explanations, error review and study statistics. It cannot determine the obligations for your job.

Frequently asked questions

Does a C licence determine which CQC I need?

No. The licence follows the vehicle; CQC follows the professional transport activity and the applicable rules and exemptions.

Can I use a goods CQC to carry passengers professionally?

No, they are separate qualifications. For professional passenger transport, check the passenger CQC and licence category appropriate to the vehicle.
