CQC: standard and accelerated courses compared

Standard and accelerated CQC courses follow distinct training routes and affect the age conditions for professional driving.

CQC rules distinguish standard and accelerated initial qualification courses. The age for professional driving in C or D depends on the route and qualification obtained.

Two regulated training routes

A CQC is a professional qualification added to the driving licence for the relevant vehicle category. To obtain it, a driver follows an initial course and passes the required examinations. The rules distinguish standard and accelerated courses: these are not interchangeable marketing labels, but routes with defined curricula and requirements. Confirm the current hours, modules and examinations with an authorised driving school or training centre.

The choice can affect the age at which professional driving is permitted. For goods transport, the decree allows drivers aged 18 to drive C and CE vehicles if they obtain a CQC after the standard initial course. With an accelerated course, it gives 21 as the age for C/CE, while C1/C1E may be driven professionally from 18 under that route. Passenger transport categories, ages and pathways have their own conditions. Do not carry the goods rules over to a passenger CQC automatically.

Check the age and licence together

A CQC course alone does not authorise someone to drive a truck or bus: the matching licence and the applicable age condition for the transport and training route are also required. Conversely, a C or D licence does not count as a CQC. Some candidates can coordinate the steps to obtain both titles, but enrolment, learner permit and practical training rules remain specific.

Before selecting a course, establish whether you need the goods or passenger qualification, which licence category you hold or plan to obtain, and which age limit applies to that route. Ask an authorised centre for the current curriculum, duration and exam sequence; there is no single course for all titles. Frequently asked questions

Is the accelerated course simply a shorter standard course?

It is a distinct route under the CQC rules, with defined curriculum and requirements. Confirm the applicable programme with an authorised centre.

Can I drive professionally after the course without a C or D licence?

No. CQC does not replace the licence for the vehicle category; both titles and the applicable age requirements are needed.
