Getting your licence
Category A2 licence: documents and tests
How to apply for an A2 licence, which documents to prepare and how the test changes depending on the licence you already hold.
You can obtain an A2 licence by taking the tests or, in specified cases, through a course under the progressive access scheme. Age, tests and documents may also depend on the category you already hold.
Who can obtain an A2 licence
The standard minimum age for category A2 is 18. The licence covers motorcycles within the power and power-to-weight limits set by law. The MIT allows applicants to obtain it by taking the tests; holders of certain existing categories may take only the practical test. The route without an exam is reserved for people who meet specific requirements, including having held an A1 licence for at least two years.
Progressive access is not a shortcut available to everyone: an A1 entitlement automatically included with a category B licence for driving in Italy only does not qualify you to enrol in that course. Before choosing a route, check your physical or digital licence, the dates it was issued and the MIT page. If your previous licence is foreign or special, ask the UMC (Civil Motorization Office) which procedure applies.
Documents for the application
For the exam route, the MIT lists form TT2112, an identity document, tax code, medical fitness certificate and PagoPA payment receipts. The application must specify the motorcycle’s technical characteristics and include a copy of its registration certificate. Receipts depend on the application and stage: check the current amounts and payment codes, especially if you book the practical test separately.
The medical examination can be carried out by an authorised doctor or a local medical commission; the certificate must fall within the validity period applicable to the issuer. If you are under 18, the application involves a parent or guardian, as specified in the official instructions. Additional documents may be required for non-EU/EEA citizens or when someone acts on your behalf. Do not rely on incomplete scans or payment slips used for another category.
Two routes: exam or progressive access
On the exam route, applicants starting from scratch must pass the theory test and then the practical test. Holders of A1, B1, B or BE may be admitted to the practical test only, as the MIT specifies; they still need to submit the required documents and payments. When required, the learner’s permit is issued after the theory test and allows practice under the applicable conditions.
Progressive access without an exam requires a course at a driving school or authorised centre, a minimum age of 18 and an A1 licence held for at least two years. The course has its own administrative process and must be completed before the licence is issued. Do not book it based only on an equivalence with a category B licence: the MIT explicitly excludes the automatic A1 entitlement valid in Italy only.
Preparing for the practical test
The test motorcycle must meet the minimum power and other specifications published by the MIT; a motorcycle with insufficient engine displacement or power may not be accepted. The application must state the specifications and include the registration certificate. Practise on the type of motorcycle you will use, because the gearbox, weight and braking response affect control and manoeuvres. If you choose an automatic transmission, the licence may carry code 78, restricting you to automatic vehicles; consider the effect before the test.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to take the theory test for A2 if I hold a category B licence?
No. The MIT information sheet says category B licence holders take only the practical test for A2. The application, medical examination and compliant test motorcycle are still required.
Can I move from A1 to A2 without an exam?
Progressive access through a course is available if you are at least 18 and have held A1 for at least two years, subject to the MIT conditions.
