Harmonised licence codes: where to find restrictions
Union codes on the back of the licence show prescriptions or adaptations: read the full number beside the relevant category.
Harmonised codes appear in field 12 on the back of the licence and may identify prescriptions, adaptations or restrictions. The precise meaning depends on the complete code.
Where the codes appear and what they indicate
A European driving licence lists categories and dates on the front; harmonised union codes may appear in column 12 on the back. They are not random numbers or new categories: they specify driving conditions or vehicle adaptations. They can concern, for example, corrective lenses, adapted controls or a restriction applying to one category. A base number may have more specific subcodes, so reading the entire entry avoids mistakes.
To read the licence, find the row for the relevant category and then check its code in column 12. If a condition applies only to B, do not automatically extend it to C or D; check each row separately. An unreadable code, unclear translation or entry that seems inconsistent with your medical assessment should be checked with the UMC or certifying doctor. A photograph or online explanation does not replace the official entry on your document.
Follow the condition that was assigned
A code relates to the driving requirements established for its holder and can have practical consequences. If it requires an adaptation, use a compatible vehicle; if it requires vision correction, follow the stated prescription. Do not treat a condition as optional or change it yourself. Challenging or updating a condition requires the appropriate medical and administrative process.
For example, two drivers may both have code 01 but different subcodes and therefore different requirements. Another code may apply only to a specific category. Check the exact codes printed on your licence and ask the competent office when they do not match what you expected. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you review theory and common rules through quizzes, chapters, explanations and error review; it cannot read your document, assign codes or give medical advice.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review theory with chapters, quizzes, explanations and error review; it does not interpret licence codes.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the codes on my licence?
On the back, in column 12, beside the relevant category. Check the full number and any subcodes.
Does a code apply to every category I hold?
Not necessarily. Check the category row it accompanies and ask the UMC if the link is unclear.
