Driving test
Fail the B96 test: can you still get a category B licence?
If you pass the B test but fail the B96 extension, MIT provides two options when both tests are taken together.
In some combined exams, yes: you may request a category B licence even if you do not pass the B96 extension. MIT guidance says a candidate who passes the B test but fails the code 96 part may give up the extension and obtain B, or retake the extension test if still eligible.
The two parts have separate outcomes
When an application covers category B with code 96, the exam may include a B test and a specific test with a trailer combination. If you pass the first but fail the extension test, a Ministry circular describes two options: request a category B licence and give up code 96, or book another code 96 extension test. Passing the B part does not automatically make the licence B96; the extension has a separate result.
The second option is available only while the learner authorisation remains valid and you have not reached the practical-test limit. The circular refers to a maximum of two practical attempts during that period. If the authorisation has expired or your attempts are exhausted, do not assume you can book only the extension again; ask the UMC which procedure applies to your file.
What to do after the result
Before choosing, ask the examiner to clarify which part you passed and which option will be recorded. If you choose category B without code 96, you may drive vehicles covered by B, but not a combination for which the extension is required. For towing, check the maximum authorised masses in the car and trailer documents; do not rely on actual load or the combination’s marketing name.
If you want to retake B96, ask the UMC to confirm the learner permit’s expiry, remaining attempts, booking process and payments. The circular says the office records the B pass when you give up code 96, and the licence may be collected in the following days under its procedure. Confirm delivery details with the office handling your test.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review general towing rules with exam quizzes and explanations. Driving and reversing a trailer combination require practical instruction; a good quiz score does not replace lessons with an instructor.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review general theory with exam quizzes, topic explanations and mistake review. B96 manoeuvres require practical instruction with an instructor.
Frequently asked questions
If I fail the B96 part, do I also lose category B?
Not necessarily. If you passed the B part but failed the extension test, you may request B and give up code 96 under the MIT procedure.
Can I retake only the B96 test?
The circular allows this if your learner authorisation is still valid and you have not used the maximum practical attempts. Confirm your record with the UMC.
