Driving licence medical: what the examination checks

How the medical fitness assessment works and what to bring, without replacing the doctor's judgement.

The examination checks the medical and psychological fitness requirements for the category. The doctor may ask for documents or refer you to the Local Medical Commission in cases covered by the rules.

What the examination is for

The medical examination checks whether a candidate meets the medical and psychological fitness requirements for the category they are applying for. It is governed by the Highway Code and the procedure set out by the MIT. The doctor assesses the individual circumstances, including the information and documents provided; an online guide cannot determine in advance whether someone is fit to drive. Depending on the case, additional tests, specialist certificates or an assessment by the Local Medical Commission (CML) may be required. If you have health-related questions, ask the certifying doctor in advance which medical reports to bring.

Bring your identity document, health card and the forms required for your application. If you take medication or have a relevant medical condition, prepare up-to-date reports and do not stop treatment to pass the examination. The doctor needs accurate information to apply the rules safely. Photographs, certificates and payments may depend on the licence category and how the office is organised; ask for the list when you book, because incomplete documents may mean another appointment.

When the Local Medical Commission may be involved

The Local Medical Commission assesses cases for which the rules require a panel or specialist evaluation. It is not an option a candidate can choose to speed things up, and the process is not identical in every province. The relevant office will tell you which documents and tests are needed, when the appointment is, and how the decision will be issued. If the doctor refers you to the CML, ask which commission is responsible for your place of residence and which reports are actually required: gathering irrelevant or outdated documents will not speed up the assessment.

At the end, a decision is made under the rules; where applicable, it may find you fit to drive, impose restrictions or require a later review. Its duration and conditions depend on the category and individual circumstances. Follow the instructions on the certificate and ask how to send it to the Motorization Authority. If you disagree with the process, ask the relevant authority or a qualified professional about the formal remedies available. The doctor's role is to assess fitness requirements, not guarantee that a driving licence will be issued.

Practical preparation

  • Ask the provider that will conduct the examination for its document checklist.
  • Bring relevant, up-to-date medical reports, especially if further assessment has been requested.
  • Confirm whether your case follows the standard process or requires the CML.
