Electric vehicle over 3,500 kg: when can category B be enough?

A limited exception may allow B up to 4,250 kg for specified alternative-fuel vehicles, without a trailer and subject to conditions.

Category B may cover certain alternative-fuel vehicles with a maximum authorised mass above 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg, if the stated conditions are met and no trailer is towed. This exception does not apply to every electric vehicle.

This is a limited exception with specific conditions

The ordinary category B rule covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg. MIT describes an exception for specified vehicles powered by alternative fuels, up to 4,250 kg and without a trailer. The extra mass may result from the power technology, but the presence of an electric motor alone does not automatically qualify a vehicle.

The rule includes conditions on both the licence holder and vehicle, including how long the driver has held B and use of the vehicle without a trailer. To establish whether a specific vehicle fits the permitted case, check its category, fuel type, maximum authorised mass and official information. Do not infer the exception just because a vehicle has a battery or exceeds the standard threshold by a small amount. If in doubt, ask the UMC using the vehicle certificate and intended use.

Towing changes the check

The exception described by MIT concerns the vehicle without a trailer. If you attach a trailer, do not automatically apply the 4,250 kg threshold: check the licence category for the entire combination under the ordinary rules. Consider both the towing vehicle’s maximum authorised mass and the trailer’s, as well as the vehicle’s documented towing limit.

For example, a battery-electric van with an authorised mass of 4,000 kg cannot be assumed to be covered by B simply because it is electric. First verify that it meets the exception, that the driver satisfies the applicable time requirement and that no trailer is being towed. If the vehicle is used for professional passenger or goods transport, separate obligations may also apply. The licence exception does not remove other road-use requirements and does not replace official confirmation when vehicle data are unclear.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review category B, limits and common road rules through chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics. To decide whether a particular vehicle fits the exception, check its documents with MIT or the UMC.

Frequently asked questions

Can every electric car up to 4,250 kg be driven with B?

No. The exception covers specified alternative-fuel vehicles and requires the stated conditions; being electric alone is not enough.

Can I use the exception while towing a trailer?

The MIT exception described here applies to the vehicle without a trailer. Check the required category separately for a towing combination.
