Emergency triangle: when to use it and where to place it

A warning triangle marks a stopped vehicle in specified cases; placement and distance depend on visibility and road type.

Article 162 provides for a mobile danger signal in specified stops or load-loss situations; place it so it is visible and, as a general rule, at least 50 metres behind the vehicle, with specific rules for motorways and built-up areas.

When a stopped vehicle must be marked

The triangle is not used for every stop. Article 162 governs the mobile danger signal when a stopped vehicle or obstacle creates a risk for other road users, such as in certain forced stops or after a load falls. The driver must assess whether the vehicle can be seen and whether the signal is required for that road type and situation under the Code. Motorways have specific cases in which warning is required.

Placement should give approaching drivers enough warning: as a general rule, put the triangle at least 50 metres behind the vehicle and make it visible from at least 100 metres. If an intersection or road layout makes that distance impossible, place it where it can best be seen. Do not cross the carriageway without first assessing the risk, and wear reflective equipment when required.

Adapt placement to the road and visibility

The standard distance does not replace visibility: a bend, crest or intersection may hide the triangle. Place it behind the vehicle on the side facing approaching traffic without creating another hazard. If you cannot place it without exposing yourself to danger, protect people first and call for help. A high-visibility vest makes the person visible; the triangle warns of the vehicle or obstacle.

For example, on a straight road with a clear view, the ordinary distance gives drivers time to react; near an intersection with limited visibility, choose a different position where it can be seen. On a motorway, also follow the specific provisions of article 176 and do not walk in the carriageway to retrieve equipment. Frequently asked questions

Must the triangle always be placed exactly 50 metres away?

The general distance is at least 50 metres, but it must also be visible; intersections and road layout may require another position.

Is the triangle required for every stop?

No. It is used in danger situations and other cases specified by article 162, not for an ordinary permitted stop.
