Requirements
Car seat: height threshold and anti-abandonment device
Below 1.50 m, a child needs an approved restraint; under four, an anti-abandonment device is also required in covered vehicles.
Article 172 requires an approved, suitable restraint for children under 1.50 m; for a child under four, the driver must also use an anti-abandonment device in vehicles covered by the rule.
Height determines the restraint requirement
For a child under 1.50 m, article 172 requires an approved restraint suitable for the child's weight. It is not enough to place the child on a seat and use an adult belt if they have not reached the stated height. Choose a compliant child seat and install it as its manufacturer directs; also check that it is compatible with the vehicle and that the child is secured correctly.
The threshold is based on height, not age: children of the same age can fall on different sides of it. For example, a child who is 1.45 m tall is still within the restraint rule, while one who is 1.52 m tall is outside that height requirement, although the vehicle's seat belts still apply. Do not remove a child seat simply because the child has reached a particular age.
An anti-abandonment device applies below age four
When carrying a child under four secured in a restraint, article 172 also requires an anti-abandonment alarm in the vehicle classes listed by the law: M1, N1, N2 and N3 vehicles registered in Italy, or registered abroad and driven by residents in Italy. This obligation depends on the child being under four and on the vehicle type, not on height alone.
A three-year-old therefore needs both a restraint suitable for height and weight and the required anti-abandonment device. A child aged four or older no longer falls under the alarm requirement by age, but may still need a child seat if under 1.50 m.
