Recovering licence points: courses, categories and limits
With points above zero, an authorised course may restore points; the maximum depends on your licence category or qualification.
If your balance is not zero, a course at an authorised driving school or centre may restore up to 6 points for AM, A, B and listed categories, or up to 9 for higher categories, CQC and CAP KB. A course cannot recover points from zero.
Check your balance and category first
A points-recovery course is available when you have lost points but your balance is not exhausted. MIT says holders of AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE may recover up to six points; the maximum is nine for C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE, CAP KA/KB and CQC. These are the maximums for the course route, not a guarantee that every participant will recover more points than they have lost.
Check your balance in the Portale dell’Automobilista or request a printout from the Motorizzazione, and verify which licence or qualification received the deduction. The course must be provided by a driving school or centre authorised by MIT. Ask which category it covers, how many hours it includes, what documents are needed and which certificate you will receive. MIT says registration requires a balance notice downloaded from the Portal or requested from the UMC.
A course does not replace the zero-points review
If your licence balance has reached zero, a points course is not a shortcut: MIT requires a licence review and examination. Completing a course also does not automatically cancel a disputed or not-yet-recorded deduction; report errors in the notice to the police authority that recorded it.
After attending the course, check that the updated balance appears in the system. Registration no longer necessarily requires the old paper letter from the Ministry: MIT lists a digital balance notice or a printout from a UMC. Before paying or starting, ask the centre to confirm you are eligible and which licence or qualification is covered. If you hold both a driving licence and CQC or CAP KB, their points are separate: check which document lost points and choose the corresponding course.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics. Points are recovered through an authorised course, not through the app.
