Driving close to the right edge: what does the rule mean in a theory quiz?
The rule sets no distance in centimetres: keep right in a safe position while following lane markings and signs.
Article 143 of the Italian Highway Code requires vehicles to travel on the right-hand side of the carriageway and close to its right edge, even when the road is clear. It gives no fixed distance: position depends on the lane, signs and safety.
What does close to the right edge mean?
The wording in the quiz does not mean you must drive at a set distance from the edge. Article 143 requires vehicles to use the right-hand side of the carriageway and stay close to its right edge, even when there are no other vehicles. In practice, keep a regular position in the right lane and do not travel in the middle or on the left without a reason. The law gives no distance in centimetres. You still need enough room to avoid potholes, drains, parked vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists without crossing into another lane.
On a road with several lanes in the same direction, the general rule is to use the right-hand lane; use lanes to the left for permitted manoeuvres such as overtaking, then return when safe. Signs can organise traffic differently or identify reserved lanes. For example, after overtaking in the left lane, check your mirrors and blind spot and move back right once there is enough room. Do not stay left simply because the road ahead is clear.
Apply the rule in quizzes and on the road
The word close means near, not touching the edge. If you move too close, you may hit an obstacle or lose stability; if you move toward the centre without need, you occupy more of the carriageway than necessary. Adjust your position to the lane width, visibility, road surface and other road users. A cyclist, for example, should not read this rule as an instruction to ride against the kerb: leave enough space to proceed with control and safety.
In a theory quiz, distinguish this rule from choosing a lane to turn or follow a direction shown by a sign. Read the whole question and check whether it refers to the carriageway, a lane, overtaking or road signs. An answer that requires a precise number of centimetres is not supported by article 143. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you review traffic rules by topic and revisit wrong answers. After a quiz, compare the explanation with the Code and describe the situation with a practical example.

The Code sets no distance in centimetres. Keep close to the right edge while allowing for the lane, obstacles and safe positioning.
If the road is clear, may I stay in the left lane?
The general rule is to travel on the right. Use the left lane for permitted manoeuvres and move back when safe, unless signs indicate otherwise.
