Can you take the driving theory test in another language or with audio?

Official quiz translations are available in French and German; audio is available to eligible candidates who request it.

Language options vary by category. Audio support is provided in regulated cases, including for candidates with a DSA certificate.

Available languages and categories

For the official AM, B, higher-category and CQC quizzes, the Portale dell’Automobilista publishes question lists in Italian and translations in French and German. To take the test in one of these languages, request it when you book and say whether you also need audio support. English is not among the official languages published by the Portal. The translated quizzes are therefore a right linked to protected linguistic arrangements, not a free choice of any language.

Do not confuse a translation used for studying with the language permitted in the official test session. The test sheet and the instructions provided on the day determine the format and available tools. If you study in a language other than the test language, learn the Italian technical terms used in signs, documents and rules carefully. You can prepare with bilingual terms, but check each translation against official material to make sure a colloquial word does not change the legal meaning.

Audio and compensatory measures

Audio support is provided for candidates with certified dyslexia or dysorthography; the MIT also grants these candidates an additional ten minutes for the theory test. Submit the documentation with your application and specify the support you need when booking. Candidates taking the test in French or German may request audio in the same language. Do not wait until the day of the test to make the request.

If you have a disability or another need, contact the UMC and describe the support you require instead of relying on reports from another office posted online. Ask for written confirmation of the language, audio, duration and accepted documents. If the support is not shown on your test notice, contact the office before attending. Measures must make the test accessible while preserving its requirements; for this reason, the arrangements must be agreed with the competent authorities, not interpreted by an app or driving school.

Check before booking

  • Give the exact category and office where you will take the test.
  • For DSA, submit the certification required by the UMC in good time.
  • Ask for confirmation of the language, audio and duration that apply to your test session.
