Theory test
How long is the driving theory test, and how many questions does it have?
The category B theory test has 30 true-or-false statements and lasts 20 minutes; other categories or accommodations may follow different rules.
For the standard category B licence, the computer-based test lasts twenty minutes and contains thirty statements. Learn the current format and check your test notice.
The category B format
The theory test for a standard category B licence consists of 30 true-or-false statements and lasts 20 minutes. Candidates answer at an assigned computer station, and the test is passed with no more than three mistakes. The MIT circular of 14 December 2021 introduced these arrangements for categories A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE, from 20 December 2021. The old reference to 40 questions and 30 minutes is no longer correct for this test.
The available time averages 40 seconds per statement, but you do not need to keep exactly the same pace for every question. Answer calmly, make a mental note of the ones that need a second read, and use the remaining time to check them. Reading a sentence all the way to the last word helps you catch negatives, exceptions and conditions. If you finish early, check the summary before submitting; if you are unsure of an answer, return to the rule you studied instead of relying on one word in isolation.
The number does not apply to every licence
An exam for a different category may have a different test sheet, time limit or pass threshold. The same applies to candidates with a DSA certificate who are entitled to compensatory measures under the relevant rules. If your notice is for AM, C, D, CQC or a licence revision exam, use that test’s syllabus and instructions, not the category B figures. The Portale dell’Automobilista provides official question lists for some categories, and the MIT publishes the procedures for obtaining a licence.
To practise, set a timer for full tests only after you have studied the topics. If you always finish in a rush, practise rereading each statement before choosing true or false; if you take too long, review the concepts that make you hesitate instead of rushing. The duration is the same for everyone taking the standard test, but reading pace varies. Preparation cannot predict which test sheet you will receive, but it can make you familiar with the format and instructions.
