Requirements
Electric quadricycle: which details show whether B1 is enough
To identify the required licence, check the electric quadricycle’s approved category, mass and power in its official documents.
Advertised power alone does not tell you whether an electric quadricycle can be driven with B1. Check its approved category and registered technical data: a light quadricycle may fall under AM, while a non-light one generally requires B1 or another applicable entitlement.
Details to check
Electric propulsion does not determine the required licence. Start with the category on the registration document or certificate of conformity: the classification distinguishes, among other types, light L6e and non-light L7e quadricycles. Then check mass and power using the figures relevant to that category. For electric vehicles, continuous rated power and a promotional peak figure may differ. Do not use an advertising number to decide which licence applies.
AM may be sufficient for an L6e vehicle if it meets all category limits. An L7e is a non-light quadricycle and generally requires B1, subject to age and other conditions; a higher category may cover it under its own rules. Compare the vehicle document with the category on the driver’s licence. If the registration data are unclear, ask the manufacturer for the certificate of conformity or ask the licensing office how to interpret them. Do not infer the category from the body shape or advertised range.
Versions, modifications and road use
The same model may be sold in versions with different classifications. Before buying, ask for documents matching the exact vehicle and check that they correspond to its registration, motor and current configuration. A change to the speed limiter, control unit or motor may make the vehicle’s actual features differ from its approved data and affect compliance or insurance. Do not drive a modified version until you know whether the change is permitted and recorded.
The licence is only one condition for road use: registration, insurance and compliance with vehicle conditions also matter. Check any restrictions for the road and those listed in the documents. A vehicle approved as L7e does not become L6e because it is driven slowly; likewise, advertised peak power may not be the relevant legal value. Official data for the specific vehicle control this decision. Theory review can help explain vehicle categories, but it cannot certify approval or replace the vehicle documents.

Frequently asked questions
Does an electric quadricycle always require B1?
No. A light L6e quadricycle may fall under AM; a non-light L7e generally requires B1. Check the documented category.
Should I use the seller’s peak power figure?
No. Use the approved data relevant to classification and ask the manufacturer or licensing office if uncertain.
