Offence with a CQC: which document loses points?

Points may be deducted from CQC or CAP KB for relevant professional transport; private driving affects the licence balance.

If an offence occurs while doing the professional work for which a CQC or CAP KB is required, the deduction applies to the professional qualification’s points. If you are driving privately or using a vehicle that does not require that qualification, points are deducted from your driving licence.

The vehicle and activity matter

MIT distinguishes which document receives a deduction based on the circumstances at the time of the offence. For professional goods or passenger transport requiring a CQC, or a service requiring CAP KB, points may be deducted from the professional title if the driver was actually performing that activity. Merely holding a CQC or KB is not enough: the vehicle, service and required qualification must match.

If the same person commits an offence while using a vehicle privately, or drives a vehicle that does not require the professional qualification, the deduction applies to the driving licence. For example, an employed CQC driver using a family car in their free time does not automatically lose CQC points for an offence in that private use. The authority considers the context and records the deduction against the relevant document.

The point balances are separate

Driving licences, CQC and CAP KB have separate points under MIT rules. Holding CQC for both goods and passengers does not create two cumulative professional balances; the professional qualification has one points allocation under the Ministry’s rules. A deduction from the driving licence does not automatically reduce the CQC balance, and vice versa, subject to specific consequences when a document reaches zero.

When you receive a notice, check which document it names and in what capacity you were driving. If you believe the wrong balance was selected, contact the police authority that recorded the offence and provide information about the vehicle and service. Keep work orders, vehicle papers and relevant employment communications. Check your balance through official channels; do not rely only on the fact that your CQC is valid. The distinction depends on how the vehicle was actually being used at the time.

Frequently asked questions

If I hold a CQC, does every offence deduct CQC points?

No. For private use or a vehicle that does not require the qualification, MIT says points are deducted from the licence.

Do goods and passenger CQC qualifications have separate balances?

No. Holding both does not create a double allocation of professional points.
