How to study
How to answer driving-test questions about right of way
Read the signs before tracing vehicle paths and apply the rule to the specific junction instead of relying on shortcuts.
For a right-of-way question, first identify signs and traffic lights, then trace each vehicle’s path and apply the relevant rule.
A reading order that helps avoid confusion
When you see a junction question, examine the scene before deciding who goes first. Look for traffic lights, road signs and road markings; then identify the number of vehicles, their directions and their paths. Only then apply the rule for that layout. Giving way to traffic from the right is an important principle, but it should not be applied while ignoring a different control or sign. In diagrams, an arrow or the shape of a sign can completely change the answer.
Follow one vehicle at a time and mentally trace the path it will take. If two paths cross, ask which vehicle must wait and whether the other is turning or going straight. Then account for vulnerable road users and any specific rules for trams or vehicles on duty shown in the question. Do not invent priority based on the order in which vehicles are drawn; use the law and the signs shown.
Check the rule in the Highway Code
The Highway Code sets out right-of-way obligations and conduct at junctions, including Articles 145 and 146 on priority and compliance with signs. When a question is confusing, consult the relevant chapter and the legal text to distinguish the general rule from an exception. A quiz diagram is schematic: do not add conditions that are not shown, but do not ignore visible details. If an answer from a third-party source seems to conflict with the signs, compare it with the official question list and ask your instructor.
Practise with a small set of junctions. For each answer, explain the order out loud: first read the sign, then apply the rule, then check whether the paths cross. If you make a mistake, identify the step you skipped. Return to the question later in a different format; this checks whether you learned the rule rather than memorised the drawing. Have an instructor or compliant material verify illustrations; do not treat unsourced diagrams from social media as official guidance.
A sequence to use on the page
- Identify traffic lights and signs controlling the junction.
- Describe the path each vehicle will take.
- Apply right-of-way rules and any specific restrictions.
- Check that the answer meets every condition shown in the diagram.

Frequently asked questions
Does the vehicle coming from the right always go first at a junction?
No. Apply the rule together with traffic lights, signs and other instructions. The specific junction may be regulated differently.
What should I do when there are three vehicles?
Compare pairs of paths and apply the signs before the general rule; then work out a consistent order without skipping a step.
