Snow chains or winter tyres: when is the requirement active?

The requirement depends on the road order and signs; there is no national rule active on every road throughout winter.

Outside built-up areas, the road authority may order winter tyres or anti-skid devices to be carried; the requirement applies on the section and during the period shown by signs or the order.

The requirement comes from a road-specific order

There is no single automatic national requirement to fit winter tyres on every Italian road throughout the cold season. Article 6 allows the road authority, outside built-up areas, to require vehicles to have suitable winter tyres fitted or anti-skid devices compatible with the vehicle on board, under an order. The instruction may cover one road or section and specify a period; read the supplementary panel and the sign at the entrance.

When a sign is active, check whether it permits either of the two types of equipment or specifies one. “Chains on board” means carrying chains compatible with the tyres and vehicle; an incorrectly sized chain is not enough. If the order requires winter tyres, do not assume chains automatically replace the required equipment. Check current local notices before setting off.

Do not confuse the season with the road condition

The calendar alone does not activate the requirement; the authority's order and the road signs matter. Conversely, if the requirement is posted, follow it even if the road looks dry or it is not snowing at that moment, unless the order says otherwise. The purpose is to have the vehicle prepared for snow or ice that may occur along the section.

Before a mountain trip or travel on a road with a seasonal requirement, check the route and signs, confirm chain compatibility and keep the vehicle instructions for fitting them. In heavy snow, equipment does not replace suitable driving: slow down and stop safely if conditions exceed what you can handle. Frequently asked questions

Are chains required on every road in winter?

No. The requirement depends on the order and signs for that section; article 6 allows the road authority to set it.

If the sign is active but there is no snow, can I ignore it?

No. Follow the instruction shown for that road and period even if the surface looks dry at the time.
