Driving licence expired for more than five years: what happens

Renewing a licence that expired more than five years ago also requires a driving test, in addition to medical fitness.

If your licence expired more than five years ago, renewal also depends on passing a driving test. The UMC handles the application and test according to the category you hold.

This is not a routine renewal

The Highway Code says that confirming the validity of a licence expired for more than five years also requires a successful driving test. The test checks whether the holder has retained the technical skills needed to drive, including vehicle control and behaviour in traffic. Passing the medical examination alone is therefore not enough: medical fitness and practical ability are separate checks.

The test is tailored to the category you hold and follows the procedures of the Civil Motorization Office (UMC). If your document covers several categories, the MIT circular specifies which test may be required for each group. Do not assume that a driving school can confirm renewal or that you only need to book a routine medical examination: the process includes a step at the UMC.

How to start the process

Contact the competent Motorization Office and explain that your licence expired more than five years ago. The MIT provides for an application to confirm validity using form TT2112 and a medical certificate; the driving test may require the form and attachments specified by the office. Ask which vehicles and accompanying drivers are allowed for your category and what payments are due. Later circulars have updated the operating instructions, so check the latest version.

Do not renew a different licence first or assume the medical certificate means your licence is already valid. In some situations, the Motorization Office may issue a booking receipt for the driving test that allows you to drive until the test date, but only after the required steps have been completed. Ask for and keep the specific document: without it, do not treat the expired licence as valid for driving.

Result and consequences

If you pass the test, the validity confirmation process can continue as provided. Failing has consequences for the licence; the Highway Code provides for revocation from the date of the test. Not attending is not the same as passing and may require a new booking. Before you go, check the vehicle, accompanying driver, time and documents with the UMC.

If the expiry date is only just beyond the threshold or your renewal history has a gap, do not calculate the days yourself: take the document to the office and ask which procedure applies. Written confirmation can prevent you from starting a routine application that later has to be changed to a driving test.

What to check before booking

Gather your licence, exact expiry date, category, medical documents and the UMC’s contact details. Ask how to book the test, whether you need a vehicle with dual controls, which form to use and which receipt, if any, allows you to drive until the test. The 2021 MIT circular and Article 126 of the Highway Code are the references; the office can confirm how they apply to your case.

Frequently asked questions

Is the medical examination enough to renew my licence?

No. If it has been expired for more than five years, Article 126 also requires you to pass a driving test.

Can I drive to the test?

Only if the UMC issues the specified test booking receipt, which authorises you to drive until the test date. Ask for this document first.
