Failed your driving test? How to arrange your next attempt

Check your remaining attempts and application deadline, then use the result to review the topics that caused difficulty.

After an unsuccessful result, check the Portale or ask the UMC how many attempts remain and when your application expires. You can book another test under the applicable conditions and focus your preparation on the mistakes.

Check your status

Failing a theory test does not automatically end the process. Read the result and check how many tests remain and how much time is left on your application. For ordinary categories, the MIT sets time windows and the number of attempts, but the details depend on the category and the application date. Check the official page for your licence category instead of relying on a general rule.

If the session was recorded incorrectly or you could not take the test, keep the appointment notice and receipts. Contact the UMC or driving school to find out whether you need to make an additional payment and how to book again. Do not open a new application until the office confirms that the current one has expired or been closed.

Book again within the deadline

Once you have confirmed that you are eligible, book the new test through the channel specified by your local office. If only a few days remain before the deadline, ask straight away what options are available; do not assume that limited availability automatically extends it. If you have used all your attempts or the application has expired, check the process for submitting a new application and whether your theory result can be carried over, which is allowed only under specific conditions.

Keep the application reference, test date, result, receipts and new booking together. After booking, check that the category, office and time are correct. If a driving school arranged the booking, ask for written confirmation and keep the session number.

Change how you study

Review the result without judging yourself. Group incorrect answers by topic and distinguish a gap in your knowledge of the rules from a reading mistake or time pressure. Read the explanation, then try new questions on the same topic. If you still get them wrong, ask your instructor to clarify the rule before taking another full mock test.

For questions with negatives or conditions, slow down and identify the subject and verb. For unfamiliar topics, alternate reading, recalling the rule from memory and answering quiz questions. Start full mock tests once you have reviewed weaker areas and can learn from the result, rather than simply using up attempts.

If the result is unclear

Ask the office how to view your answer sheet or result, since the detailed view may depend on the system. Do not photograph other candidates’ data or share login details. If you have a dyslexia diagnosis or an authorised accommodation, make sure it is recorded for your next session before the test begins.

Frequently asked questions

How many attempts do I have after failing?

For a category B licence, you have two theory tests within six months of submitting your application. If you fail the first, you can try once more within the same period; after two unsuccessful results, you must submit a new application.

Do I need to submit a new application after my first mistake?

No, if you have used only one of the two available theory tests and your application has not expired. Book the second test within six months of submitting the application.
