How to study
Can you study for your driving test without an internet connection?
You can study offline if the materials are already available on your device; check which features need a connection.
You can prepare offline with materials already stored on your device, but downloads, syncing and purchases may require internet access. Check the specific app before going offline.
Offline study is practical
You do not need a connection to review if your book, chapters or quizzes are already available on your device. Before travelling or studying somewhere without coverage, open the materials while online and check that the questions have loaded. Do not assume a downloaded app works entirely offline: updates, sign-in, backups, purchases and content that has not yet been saved may need internet access.
Offline study can help you focus, save mobile data or study where the signal is weak. Choose a topic, complete the available quizzes and note any questions to ask your instructor. Being offline does not automatically make the content official or up to date: check which edition you are using and when it was updated.
Try it before you leave
Turn on airplane mode for a few minutes while you are still at home, then open chapters, quizzes and explanations. Try completing a session and check that your answers are saved on the device. Reconnect and see whether the app syncs your progress without duplicating or losing data. If the service requires sign-in or an initial download, complete it before going offline.
Also check your battery and available storage. If you use notes or screenshots, avoid recording unnecessary personal information and save explanations somewhere easy to find. Printed material is a good alternative if you cannot rely on your phone staying charged.
Limits to keep in mind
Some tasks cannot be completed offline: updating the question bank, recovering a password, checking a subscription, making purchases or sending progress. If a service you paid for is unavailable offline, contact the app’s support team when you reconnect. Do not delete data or reinstall the app to try to fix it: you could lose local progress.
Offline study does not replace an instructor’s explanation of difficult questions or practical driving. Alternate quizzes with chapter study and check the sources when a rule seems to have changed. The Ministry’s pages are useful for checking current requirements, procedures and rules once you are back online.
Preparing an offline study session
Before you leave, choose a topic and load its questions. Do a first round without looking at the answers, then review saved mistakes and note your questions. When you get back, update your materials and check that your progress has synced. That way, internet access helps you update and compare materials without being required for every minute of study.
