Getting an Italian licence without Italian citizenship: what to check

Foreign applicants should check residence, identity and any additional documents required by the MIT.

Italian citizenship is not the only route to an Italian driving licence. You must meet the relevant residence requirement and submit personal documents plus any additional papers the MIT requires for non-EU applicants.

Residence and documents are separate checks

You do not need to be an Italian citizen to apply, but the residence requirements still apply. The MIT asks applicants to declare residence in Italy or, for EU/EEA citizens, normal residence under European criteria. Normal residence considers habitual stay and personal or professional ties; university attendance alone does not automatically transfer residence, subject to the MIT’s equivalence for students present in the territory at least six months a year.

You must also check identity and residence-status documents. The MIT category B page lists extra documents for non-EU citizens, including a residence permit or card and, where a first issue or renewal is pending, specified receipts. EU/EEA citizens may have different documents. Do not use a checklist for another status: identify your citizenship and residence situation and ask the UMC which file applies.

Check your situation before applying

Prepare a list with your identity document, tax-code proof, residence evidence and residence-status document where required. If you live between countries, describe your periods of stay and relevant ties rather than choosing a country for examination convenience. If a permit application is pending, check which receipts and copies are needed. For foreign documents, ask whether translation or legalisation is required; do not assume one rule applies to all.

For example, a non-EU resident in Italy renewing a permit follows the specific MIT list and documents their status; an EU citizen must check normal residence. Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers quizzes and explanations for multilingual revision, but it does not determine residence or verify immigration documents.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise quizzes and explanations in several languages; check residence and permit papers with the UMC.
