Learner permit and temporary permit: are they the same?

No. A learner permit follows a passed theory test; a temporary permit applies to specific CML renewal procedures.

A learner permit authorises practice after passing theory in the ordinary licence route. A temporary driving permit is a separate document for specific cases where a licence renewal is handled by the Local Medical Commission after expiry. The two documents have different conditions and uses.

Learner permit after theory

For the ordinary B licence process, MIT says the learner permit is issued after you pass the theory test. It allows practice under the conditions for that category and within the validity period shown on the document. It is not a full licence and should not be confused with an application receipt or a temporary permit for renewal.

Check the category, issue date, expiry date and practice rules on your learner permit. If you have not passed theory or are using a different procedure, do not assume that filing an application lets you drive. The vehicle, accompanying person and practice conditions must comply with the rules. If unsure about your document, ask the UMC before driving.

Temporary permit during a CML renewal

The temporary permit described by MIT concerns drivers who must renew through a Local Medical Commission but cannot complete the visit before their licence expires, under specified conditions. The CML may issue it until the renewal process is complete only where no blocking issues apply; other review procedures or clinical cases may follow different rules. A booking by itself is not a permit.

Before driving under a temporary document, confirm that it was actually issued, check its validity and read any limits. If the licence record has pending restrictions, contact the UMC or CML for clarification. The learner permit supports training a new candidate; the temporary permit manages specific continuity of driving during a renewal. An app can help review theory, but it cannot issue or extend either authorisation.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review B theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and statistics, but it does not issue driving authorisations.

Frequently asked questions

Does a learner permit let me drive after my licence expires?

No. It authorises practice in the acquisition process and is separate from a temporary permit for certain renewal procedures.

Is a CML appointment enough to keep driving?

No. The temporary permit must be issued and there must be no blocking conditions, under MIT’s rules.
