D1E or DE: when does your previous theory test count?

Theory for D1 or D passed from 2 March 2015 counts for the corresponding E extension, while the practical test remains required.

MIT says a D1 or D theory test passed from 2 March 2015 also counts for the corresponding D1E or DE extension. The practical test and category requirements still apply.

Recognition follows the original category

For the trailer extension, the MIT D1E-DE page recognises theory passed from 2 March 2015 for the corresponding towing category: D1 for D1E and D for DE. This avoids repeating theory when the previous examination covered the towing-vehicle category to which E is being added.

The match matters. D1 theory does not convert into D theory for a DE application; D theory is the one linked to the D towing vehicle. Check which category you hold and retrieve the examination date and result. If the test was before the stated date or your application has an unusual feature, ask the motor vehicle office to confirm the applicable process rather than assuming the theory remains valid.

The extension's practical test remains

Recognition of theory does not issue D1E or DE and does not remove the practical test. You must submit the correct application, hold the required towing-vehicle category and take the test in the required vehicle. The practical examination covers the combination with trailer and the associated driving and manoeuvring skills; an earlier theory result does not demonstrate those abilities.

Before booking, identify whether your towing vehicle category is D1 or D, decide which extension you need and ask the test centre or driving school to confirm that the theory date meets the ministry criterion. For a trailer above 750 kg, D1 extends to D1E and D to DE, subject to the vehicle's technical data. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review D theory with quizzes, explanations and error review. It cannot access your record, confirm official recognition or replace the practical test.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review D theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Frequently asked questions

I passed D theory in 2020. Can I go straight to the DE practical test?

MIT says D theory passed from 2 March 2015 counts for the corresponding DE extension. You must still hold D, apply and pass the practical test.

Does D1 theory also count for DE?

No. It counts for the corresponding D1E extension. DE is linked to category D and its recognised theory.
