DE licence: when is it needed for a bus and trailer?

DE is required for a category D towing vehicle with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg; D alone stays within that threshold.

The trailer's authorised mass sets the threshold

Category D covers a vehicle designed for more than eight passengers besides the driver and permits a trailer whose maximum authorised mass is no more than 750 kg. When the towing vehicle is category D and the trailer exceeds 750 kg, DE is the category for the combination. The threshold uses the maximum authorised mass in the documents, not the trailer's actual weight at that moment.

The difference between 750 and 751 kg matters for this threshold: D permits a trailer authorised at exactly 750 kg, while 751 kg exceeds the limit and points to DE. The correct licence is not the only requirement. The bus must be approved to tow that mass and meet technical coupling, stability and road-use conditions. A bus with lower towing capacity does not become suitable just because its driver holds DE.

Check the registration documents for both bus and trailer, separating maximum authorised mass, unladen mass and towing capacity. If the vehicle carries passengers as a job, DE does not replace any passenger CQC required for that service. The licence authorises the combination; a professional qualification covers the driver and activity. Age requirements also depend on the route to D and any conditions linked to a CQC.

Before using a bus with a trailer, confirm that the towing vehicle is category D, whether the trailer is above 750 kg, and whether the technical data permit the pairing. If the towing vehicle is D1, the extension for a trailer above the threshold is D1E, not DE.
