D1 or D: which licence does a minibus need?

To choose between D1 and D, compare approved passenger capacity and length, then check the trailer and intended use.

D1 covers vehicles with up to 16 passengers besides the driver and a maximum length of 8 metres. D covers vehicles designed for more than eight passengers besides the driver, without D1's length limit.

D1 has two limits; D is based on passenger capacity

D1 has two conditions that must both be met: the vehicle must be designed for no more than 16 people besides the driver and must not be longer than 8 metres. D covers vehicles designed to carry more than eight people besides the driver and does not list D1's 8-metre limit. Passenger count alone therefore does not always distinguish the categories; check the approved configuration and length as well.

A vehicle with 12 passenger seats and a length of 7 metres fits the D1 capacity and dimension limits. If that same vehicle is 8.5 metres long, it no longer meets D1's length requirement; assess the applicable passenger-vehicle category against its documents and approval. A bus designed for more than 16 passengers exceeds D1's capacity limit even if it is shorter than 8 metres.

Do not choose by commercial label

“Minibus”, “shuttle” and “bus” are everyday terms, not a substitute for the category in the vehicle documents. Check designed passenger capacity, vehicle length and any trailer. Both D1 and D permit a trailer with maximum authorised mass no more than 750 kg; above that threshold, consider D1E for a D1 towing vehicle and DE for a D towing vehicle. The vehicle's technical towing capacity is a separate check.

If you will drive professionally, also establish whether a passenger CQC is required. The MIT lists 21 as the standard minimum age for D1 and 24 for D, with a D route linked to CQC that can begin at 21 if its conditions are met. Before booking a test, compare the vehicle document and test-vehicle requirements with the driving school. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you study D chapters and review quizzes, explanations and mistakes. It supports theory study; it cannot classify a vehicle or provide practical lessons.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps study D theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations and error review.

Frequently asked questions

Can a minibus with 17 passenger seats qualify for D1?

No. D1 covers up to 16 people besides the driver. Assess the category using approved capacity and the vehicle's other data.

Does D1 cover a vehicle longer than 8 metres?

No. D1's limit is 8 metres inclusive. A longer vehicle does not meet this condition even if it has few seats.
