Category D after 60: which vehicles can you drive?

After age 60, D1 and D are limited to B vehicles unless you hold the annual certificate for continued professional passenger transport.

After age 60, D1 and D permit only vehicles covered by category B; an annual CML certificate may be needed to continue professional passenger transport, up to the MIT age limit of 68.

Category D changes after age 60

MIT distinguishes licence validity from the ability to continue driving buses and other passenger-transport vehicles. After turning 60, D1 and D allow only vehicles covered by category B; D1E and DE remain limited to vehicles requiring BE. Do not read this as automatic cancellation of every category: check the rows and codes on the actual document.

To continue driving vehicles used for passenger transport, ministry rules provide for a specific annual certificate from age 60 to 68, following a specialist examination by a local medical commission. Without the required conditions, you cannot use the higher category as before age 60. After age 68, the professional vehicles listed by MIT may no longer be driven, even if the document retains other entitlements.

Check the certificate, expiry and vehicle use

Before accepting a bus shift, confirm that the annual certificate is valid and that the CML has confirmed fitness for the category and activity. The certificate does not replace licence renewal: D1/D have their own renewal intervals, separate from the requirements for professional passenger transport after 60. When driving a B vehicle, follow the conditions for category B shown on the document.

For example, a 62-year-old with D can rely on the remaining B entitlement for a car; to return to a bus used for passenger transport, the annual procedure is required and the age limit up to 68 still applies. Contact the CML and employer before scheduling the service. Frequently asked questions

Can I drive any bus with D at age 61?

No. After 60, D1/D ordinarily cover only B vehicles; professional passenger vehicles require the specified annual certificate and remain subject to age limits.

Does the annual certificate replace licence renewal?

No. The licence and certificate serve different purposes; check the validity of both and the CML conditions.
