Professional qualifications
Category D and passenger CQC: when do you need both?
D covers the passenger vehicle; a passenger CQC may also be required to carry out professional transport.
A category D licence covers vehicles designed for more than eight passengers besides the driver. Professional passenger transport may also require a passenger CQC, subject to exemptions.
What a category D licence covers
Category D covers vehicles designed to carry more than eight people besides the driver. It answers the vehicle question: which bus category you may drive. If the towing vehicle pulls a trailer whose maximum authorised mass is above 750 kg, you must also consider the DE extension; D alone permits a trailer within that threshold.
The registration document and approved configuration determine passenger capacity, while the label “bus” does not establish the category by itself. D1, for example, has specific limits of 16 passengers and 8 metres. Choose by comparing the technical data, not just the service or the vehicle's name.
When the passenger CQC applies
The Driver Qualification Card for passenger transport is separate from the driving licence. In general, it is required to drive buses professionally in services covered by the rules, but exemptions depend on the activity, purpose and conditions of vehicle use. Holding D does not prove that the CQC is unnecessary, and the word “professional” alone does not settle every case.
For example, a driver operating a bus in a service covered by the requirement may need both D and a passenger CQC. If the vehicle is used in an activity exempted by law, the analysis may differ; assess the actual rule and facts instead of guessing. CQC training and procedures are separate from the driving-licence tests. Confirm the service with an employer or competent office before starting.

Frequently asked questions
Is a D licence enough to drive a bus for work?
D covers the vehicle category. Certain professional services also require a passenger CQC unless an applicable exemption applies.
Does a passenger CQC replace category D?
No. CQC is a separate professional qualification; driving a category D vehicle still requires a D licence.
