C1E or CE: do you retake theory after C1 or C?

Theory for C1 or C passed from 2 March 2015 may count for the matching E extension of that towing category.

If you passed theory for C1 or C from 2 March 2015, MIT says it also counts for the corresponding C1E or CE extension. Other requirements and the practical test remain.

Theory carries over to the corresponding extension

This rule concerns the trailer extension that adds E to a category already examined. According to the MIT C1E-CE page, a theory test passed from 2 March 2015 for C1 or C also counts for the corresponding extension: C1E after C1, or CE after C. This avoids repeating theory already recognised for the same towing-vehicle category.

“Corresponding” matters: passing C1 should not automatically be treated as passing C theory for a CE extension, and the rule does not convert one licence category into another. Check which category appears on your licence, which examination you passed and its date. If the theory test predates 2 March 2015 or your situation differs from the ministry page, ask the motor vehicle office which process applies.

The application and practical test still apply

Recognition of theory does not automatically issue C1E or CE. You must apply for the extension, meet the category requirements and take the required practical test using a compliant test vehicle. The practical test assesses driving a combination, including manoeuvres and the specific skills required; it is not replaced by the earlier theory examination.

Before paying or booking, check the MIT process for the exact category and ask the driving school or motor vehicle office to confirm that your theory result and date are recognised. CE requires you to hold C; C1E requires C1. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help review C quizzes and explanations and revisit mistakes, but it cannot determine whether the office recognises your test or replace the practical test.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review C theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Frequently asked questions

I passed C in 2018. Must I retake theory for CE?

The MIT page says C theory passed from 2 March 2015 counts for the corresponding CE extension. Still confirm how it applies to your extension application.

Does recognised theory grant CE directly?

No. You still need the extension application, other requirements and the practical test with the required vehicle.
