C1E with a B towing vehicle: when the combination can reach 12 tonnes
C1E includes one specific combination of a category B vehicle and a heavy trailer, with a total authorised mass of no more than 12,000 kg.
C1E also covers a category B towing vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 3,500 kg, if the combination's total authorised mass does not exceed 12,000 kg.
A combination expressly covered by the category
C1E is not limited to a C1 truck towing a trailer. The Italian ministerial definition also covers a combination made up of a category B towing vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 3,500 kg, provided the maximum authorised mass of the whole combination is no more than 12,000 kg. This is a specific C1E configuration. It should not be confused with what an ordinary B licence or a BE extension allows.
For example, if the B vehicle is authorised at 3,500 kg and the trailer at 5,000 kg, their total is 8,500 kg and stays within the C1E ceiling. If the figures on the documents total 12,100 kg, the limit is exceeded even when the actual load is light. Use maximum authorised mass, not unladen weight or the load being carried on a given trip.
The licence does not override technical limits
A licence category says which combinations you may drive, but it does not make every pairing technically permissible. The towing vehicle must be authorised in its registration document to pull that trailer; coupling equipment, masses and technical requirements must also match. A total below 12 tonnes is therefore necessary for this C1E configuration, but it is not general permission to connect any trailer to any car.
