Requirements
C1E: how heavy can the truck and trailer combination be?
C1E extends C1 to combinations with a trailer over 750 kg, within the specified maximum authorised mass for the whole combination.
With C1E, a C1 towing vehicle and a trailer over 750 kg may have a combined maximum authorised mass of no more than 12,000 kg. The category also covers one specific combination with a B towing vehicle.
The limit applies to the whole combination
C1E cannot be assessed by looking at the trailer alone. Italian law and the MIT page include combinations with a C1 towing vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorised mass is over 750 kg, provided the maximum authorised mass of the whole combination does not exceed 12,000 kg. Add the authorised figures for the vehicle and trailer; do not use their actual weight on a particular journey. A truck authorised at 7,500 kg with a trailer authorised at 4,000 kg makes an 11,500 kg combination and is within the overall ceiling, subject to the other technical and towing requirements.
C1E also covers a specific combination with a category B towing vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer authorised above 3,500 kg. This combination must also stay within 12,000 kg. That special provision does not mean an ordinary B licence alone allows a heavy trailer. The authorised mass and permitted combination must be supported by the vehicles' registration documents.
Check the figures before coupling
Do not mix up maximum authorised mass, unladen mass, payload and the vehicle's towing capacity. The 12-tonne licence limit concerns the maximum authorised mass of the complete combination. You must also respect the towing vehicle's stated capacity, coupling conditions and the trailer's specifications. For example, a combination with authorised masses totalling 12,200 kg falls outside C1E even if it is empty and weighs less than 12 tonnes on a scale.
Read both registration documents and compare the towing vehicle category, authorised masses and technical compatibility. If the combination exceeds 12,000 kg, C1E is insufficient; ask the competent motor vehicle office which higher category applies. For a category C towing vehicle with a trailer over 750 kg, the relevant extension is CE. Does the C1E 12-tonne limit apply to the trailer?
No. It applies to the maximum authorised mass of the whole combination: towing vehicle and trailer together.
Can I tow any trailer as long as the combination is below 12 tonnes?
