An eight-tonne truck: do you need C1 or C?

C1 reaches 7,500 kg maximum authorised mass; a vehicle above that limit is assessed under category C.

C1 covers motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg. An eight-tonne truck exceeds the C1 limit and requires category C if it meets the category C vehicle definition.

Compare maximum authorised mass

To choose between C1 and C, do not look at the truck’s actual weight on a particular trip or its current load. The relevant figure is maximum authorised mass in the vehicle documents. C1 allows vehicles above 3,500 kg and no more than 7,500 kg, designed for no more than eight people in addition to the driver and outside categories D1 and D. Category C covers vehicles above 3,500 kg under the Ministry’s definition, subject to the passenger limit and stated exclusions.

A truck with maximum authorised mass of 8,000 kg is therefore outside C1; if it is a motor vehicle designed to carry no more than eight people in addition to the driver and is not in D1 or D, category C is required. Category C allows a trailer up to 750 kg; for a heavier trailer, assess category CE. Check the vehicle certificate for mass and classification before booking a test or taking the vehicle.

Do not confuse mass with payload

Payload is the amount of cargo a vehicle can carry, while maximum authorised mass is its permitted total. An empty eight-tonne truck does not become a C1 vehicle because its actual weight at that moment is below 7,500 kg. Towing mass and combination mass are separate figures too.

Before using a vehicle, compare your licence category and codes with its authorised mass and passenger capacity. If it is specially registered or converted, do not rely on the commercial name “truck”; ask the UMC to confirm the category from the type approval. Category C does not replace any professional qualifications required for commercial transport. The correct licence entitlement and activity requirements are separate checks to complete before the journey.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review C and C1 categories through chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics. To classify a particular truck, check maximum authorised mass and category in its vehicle certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Does an empty 8,000 kg truck fall within C1?

No. Classification depends on maximum authorised mass, not the actual weight of the empty vehicle.

Does category C allow any trailer?

No. A trailer up to 750 kg maximum authorised mass is allowed with C; above that, check CE.
