Category C1 for a motorhome: mass and passenger seats matter

To determine whether B is enough or C1 is needed, check the motorhome’s maximum authorised mass and seats in its documents.

Category C1 covers vehicles above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, designed to carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. For a motorhome, maximum authorised mass and approved seats matter, not the actual load on a trip.

Mass and seats classify the motorhome

Category B covers vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of no more than 3,500 kg. C1 covers vehicles above that threshold and up to 7,500 kg, other than D1 and D vehicles, designed to carry no more than eight people in addition to the driver. MIT specifically lists heavy motor caravans as an example. If the motorhome falls in that range, B alone is insufficient.

Read the maximum authorised mass and number of seats in the vehicle documents. Do not use the weight measured during a journey: an unloaded motorhome with few passengers can weigh much less and still be classified by its authorised mass. Also distinguish approved seats from seats or belts installed later. If the vehicle exceeds 7,500 kg or is designed for more people, assess another licence category.

Check towing and the licence you actually hold

C1 allows towing a trailer with maximum authorised mass up to 750 kg. For a heavier trailer, check the combination and the appropriate E extension against the vehicle documents. The motorhome’s technical towing limit may also be lower than the licence category limit.

Check your actual licence: some C1 licences carry code 97 and are restricted to vehicles not subject to tachograph installation and use requirements. The code does not change C1’s general scope, but may exclude a particular vehicle. Before buying or travelling, compare the codes on your licence with the motorhome’s classification and intended use. If it was imported or modified, ask the UMC to check the type approval. A document check beforehand can prevent discovering a licence issue after a trip has been arranged.

To review mass, categories and rules, Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, exam quizzes, mistake review and progress statistics. Check the motorhome’s classification in its own circulation documents.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a motorhome with B if its actual weight is under 3,500 kg but its authorised mass is 4,000 kg?

No. The category is based on maximum authorised mass in the documents, not current weight.

Does the number of seats affect the category?

Yes. C1 covers up to eight passengers in addition to the driver; more approved seats require checking another category.
