Medical exam for category C: why it differs from B
An extension to category C requires a fitness assessment for that vehicle group; a previous B medical exam does not replace it.
To obtain or extend a licence to category C, you need a new fitness assessment for that category, even if you already hold B. Group 2 licences have specific medical requirements; in some circumstances the assessment is assigned to the Local Medical Commission.
Licence category and group
MIT states that medical assessment is required for obtaining, renewing, reviewing and extending a licence to a different category. B and C do not authorise the same vehicles: C covers heavier goods vehicles and belongs to medical group 2. A medical visit previously carried out for B therefore does not replace the assessment required for an extension to C. The authorised doctor considers the requirements for the category requested and the individual’s circumstances.
An ordinary assessment may be performed by an authorised doctor, while the CML handles specified clinical situations involving doubt, special licences and certain category or age cases. For some conditions, MIT also requires a commission that includes a specialist. Do not infer that every C applicant must attend the CML just because of the category: ask the certifying doctor or UMC which route applies and prepare any requested reports.
Plan the application and visit
Before applying for C, check the MIT category page and coordinate the medical appointment with the certificate’s validity window. The Ministry lists different validity periods for a visit with a single doctor and one with the Local Medical Commission; avoid booking too early without considering when you will file the application. If the commission sets restrictions or a shorter validity period, the licence is issued according to its decision.
If you have questions about eyesight, medication or a clinical condition, discuss them with the healthcare professional and provide complete information. Do not stop medication to try to influence the result; treatment decisions belong with your doctor. Before driving a category C vehicle, you must hold the issued C entitlement and follow any codes or conditions.
