Requirements
Category C after 65: renewal and the medical commission
After age 65, C categories renew every two years and confirmation requires an examination by the local medical commission.
C1, C1E, C and CE licences renew every five years until age 65; after turning 65, they renew every two years through a local medical commission.
What changes when you turn 65
MIT lists a five-year renewal interval for C1, C1E, C and CE until age 65, then a two-year interval after that threshold. After 65, confirmation must be handled by a local medical commission (CML), not the standard route used for a B licence. Your individual expiry remains the date printed on the licence or communicated after the examination.
For example, a 66-year-old with category C falls in the two-year renewal band and must attend a CML. The commission checks the physical and mental fitness requirements for driving and may assess restrictions or conditions in light of the person's health. Do not assume the licence keeps a five-year term just because the previous renewal was issued before age 65: consider both the age threshold and the actual expiry date.
Prepare for renewal and distinguish categories
Book in advance because CML appointments depend on the commission's availability and may require specific medical records. Ask its office which reports are needed and whether specialist examinations are required; MIT does not list one clinical checklist for every applicant. Do not drive beyond the expiry date while waiting for confirmation. CE also has particular rules after 65 for heavy road trains and articulated vehicles, plus a later age limit; do not confuse them with ordinary C validity.
If you hold several categories, check the validity of each row and any codes or restrictions updated after the examination. Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter study, C quizzes, explanations and error review for theory; it does not assess medical fitness or book CML visits. The medical commission decides fitness and validity period.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review C theory with chapters, quizzes, explanations and error review; it does not perform medical assessments or book CML appointments.
