Professional qualifications
Category C and the goods CQC: what does each document authorise?
A C licence covers a vehicle category; the goods CQC qualifies a driver for certain professional transport activities.
C and the goods CQC are separate titles: the licence concerns the vehicle, while a CQC is required for professional goods transport in cases set by law, subject to exemptions.
A driving licence and a different qualification
Category C authorises the driving of certain goods vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg, subject to the age and basic-licence requirements. It answers “which vehicle may I drive?” by itself. It does not certify that a driver is qualified to perform every professional goods-transport service.
The Driver Qualification Card for goods transport, called CQC merci in Italy, is a separate professional title. European and Italian rules require it to drive the relevant categories of vehicle in professional goods transport, except where an exemption applies. For example, a driver operating a category C truck in a haulage business may need both the C licence and the goods CQC. The activity cannot be classified from the vehicle alone: the journey's purpose, organisation and statutory exemptions also matter.
Check the activity, not just the category
To determine whether both titles are required, identify the vehicle and category, the nature of the transport and its purpose: own-account transport, carriage for hire or reward, or another activity. The law has cases where a CQC is not required. Do not infer an exemption simply because the vehicle belongs to a business or the trip is short. Ask the employer or competent authority to assess the actual case under current rules.
Age pathways may connect a licence and a CQC, but requirements remain specific: holding C does not mean you already have a CQC, and obtaining a CQC does not replace the vehicle category. The two titles may also have different renewal and training procedures. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you study C theory and, where available, goods CQC quizzes with explanations and error review. The app cannot certify an exemption or issue a professional qualification.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review C and CQC theory through chapters, quizzes, explanations, mistake review and study statistics.

Are the goods CQC and category C the same title?
