Do you need a B licence before C or D?

B is the prerequisite category for C and D; E extensions require the corresponding towing-vehicle category.

You must hold a B licence before obtaining C1, C, D1 or D. C1E, CE, D1E and DE require the category of their respective towing vehicle first.

Category B comes before the higher categories

Yes. The route to C1, C, D1 or D requires you to already hold category B. Article 116 of the Italian Highway Code lists these vehicle categories, and the licensing procedure links their award to the underlying licence. Passing the B theory test without having been issued the licence is not the same as holding it. If you are planning to enrol for C or D, confirm with the driving school or motor vehicle office that B has been issued and remains valid.

This prerequisite applies even when the target category covers a different kind of vehicle: B comes first for both C1/C goods vehicles and D1/D passenger vehicles. The age and examination requirements for the higher category remain separate. Some professional pathways allow coordinated licence and CQC training, but those have specific conditions and do not automatically remove the basic licence requirement.

An E extension requires the matching towing category

Categories with E extend a licence to vehicle combinations and require the category of the towing vehicle: C1 before C1E, C before CE, D1 before D1E, and D before DE. For example, a B licence alone does not allow you to book a CE test without first obtaining C. The extension concerns the trailer; it does not replace the authorisation for the towing vehicle.

Before starting an application, check which licence you already hold, whether it is valid, the required age and the exact category. D may also require a professional qualification depending on the work; that is separate from the sequence of licence categories. Frequently asked questions

Can I start the C test if I have only passed B theory?

You must hold B. Passing the theory test without the B licence being issued is not equivalent to holding the category.

Is a B licence enough to obtain DE?

No. An E category requires the matching towing-vehicle category: DE requires D, in addition to its other requirements.
