Theory test
Category BE: when must you retake the theory test?
You do not repeat BE theory if you took the B theory test after 1 December 2013; earlier candidates answer oral questions.
For BE, a candidate who passed the B theory test after 1 December 2013 does not repeat a theory exam. If the B test was earlier, MIT provides for specific oral questions during the first part of the practical examination.
The date of your B theory test determines the route
The MIT page for obtaining BE distinguishes candidates by the date of their B theory test. If you took it after 1 December 2013, you do not repeat a separate BE theory exam. If you took it before then, the first part of the practical examination includes oral questions on relevant BE topics, such as towing limits, coupling and trailer braking systems, how the combination behaves and safe driving conditions.
The relevant date is when you took the B theory test, not only the date printed on your current licence or the date when you apply for BE. Find a record or ask the UMC to check your file. If your history includes a conversion, duplicate document or a licence obtained abroad, do not infer the exemption from the issue date alone; ask the Ministry or testing office how the original test is classified.
BE still requires a practical test
A BE licence is needed for certain combinations consisting of a B towing vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer beyond the limits allowed with B and code 96. You must already hold category B and pass the BE practical test using a combination that meets the required specifications. An exemption from another theory exam does not exempt you from preparing for towing and safety, or from the oral check that may apply to the earlier route.
Before booking, check that your test vehicle is suitable, the trailer meets the required mass and characteristics and your dates are documented. If you are unsure which case applies, ask the office to check before the test day. You can still review general road rules: understanding trailer behaviour, using mirrors and managing distances matters both for the practical test and everyday driving.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, exam quizzes, mistake review and statistics to help you review general towing rules. Preparing for the BE practical examination also requires practice with an instructor using a vehicle combination.
Frequently asked questions
Does BE always require a new theory quiz?
No. Candidates who took the B theory test after 1 December 2013 do not repeat theory; earlier candidates have a targeted oral check during the practical test.
Is it enough that my B licence was issued after 2013?
The rule refers to the date of the B theory test. If that date is unclear, ask the UMC to check your record.
