B96 test: what the practical test includes
Code 96 extends the combinations you can tow with category B through a specific practical test; it should not be confused with category BE.
The B96 requires a test of skills and behaviour using a compliant vehicle combination. Confirm the procedure with the UMC.
When you need code 96
Code 96 applies to combinations with a category B towing vehicle and trailer where the maximum authorised mass of the combination is over 3,500 kg but no more than 4,250 kg. It is not a separate licence like BE: it is a harmonised code added to category B. This difference matters when choosing the test and vehicle. Consult Article 116 of the Highway Code and the MIT category B page to check the permitted masses in your case.
According to MIT’s operational guidance, the category B test with code 96 has a section assessing skills in a category B vehicle and a specific section with the trailer combination. Candidates must show that they can control the vehicle, couple the trailer, carry out the required manoeuvres and drive the combination safely. The manoeuvres and details follow the applicable decrees and circulars: do not assume that every office uses the same route or that private practice is equivalent to the test.
The vehicle and booking
The test vehicle must meet the technical and weight requirements for code 96. Before paying or booking, ask the UMC or driving school who will provide the towing vehicle and trailer, what documents are needed and whether the test takes place alongside the category B test or as a later extension. Administrative procedures may vary depending on the route, but the vehicle must match the category required. If you take tests in an automatic vehicle, code 78 may appear alongside code 96: MIT explains how the combination of restrictions depends on the vehicle used for the tests.
Practise with an instructor who has experience with trailers, and ask to repeat coupling, checks, reversing and cornering. A combination is longer and behaves differently from a car on its own; when driving on public roads, also check weight limits, the load and coupling compatibility. Code 96 does not replace vehicle registration or loading rules. Do not plan a towing trip based only on the trailer’s actual weight: the licence category required depends on the licence, registration documents and maximum authorised masses.
Candidate checklist
- Check the maximum authorised masses of the towing vehicle and combination.
- Confirm the test and test vehicle with the UMC.
- Ask whether the test is taken alongside category B or as a later extension.
- Practise manoeuvres and coupling with an experienced instructor.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to take the theory test again to get B96?
No. Code 96 is obtained by passing a practical test with the required combination; there is no new theory test. If the combination’s maximum authorised mass is over 3,500 kg but no more than 4,250 kg, category B can be extended with code 96.
Are B96 and BE the same?
No. B96 covers a combination with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg. BE is a separate category for category B combinations with a heavier trailer, within the technical limits of the vehicle and trailer.
